Who am I?

My story is simple. I savor moments, relationships, and emotions and cannot wait to share those with others utilizing my camera as a tool. This is a great gig. For years I did corporate marketing and market research, but never felt fulfilled. Taking pictures was always a side gig and even when I studied it for 4 years, I still had no intention of doing it professionally. In 2002 when the corporate world closed its doors to me, I took some time off to raise my boys. During that time, I still took pictures and was always approached by brides to be to shoot their weddings or by friends of friends to do portraits of their families. I eventually warmed up to the idea and in no time, this side gig became a thriving business which I still have to pinch myself about. I have fun, am pretty good at what I do and enjoy hanging out with newly married couples, kids, babies, and moms ready to have babies. I feel so lucky -- I'm my own boss and work from home in my PJ's at night or not at all if I so choose. I purposely do not shoot more than 10-12 weddings a year and am careful with my bookings for portraits because it's imperative that I attend soccer games, cook dinner for my family and focus on some of my charity work. When both kids are in school full-time, I plan to ramp up the work, but until I choose to do that, I am a mom and a photographer trying to juggle both. All that said, I do work pretty hard as I see midnight on my clock quite often and absolutely love working!

What do I shoot?

I split my time between shooting weddings and portraits. I have consistently shot environmental portraits for the past 5-7 years (or longer) but in the past couple years have started to do a limited number of in-studio shoots for maternity and newborns. I also spend a fair share of my time working for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep as a volunteer photographer and area coordinator raising awareness of the foundation, recruiting and training new photographers and doing some PR. Please contact me if you have any questions and I hope we can work together soon.

quickbooks-thanks

For the past year+, I have had a good friend teach me QuickBooks for all my accounting. Now, most photographers hate this aspect of running their business. I totally understand that lack of interest in doing numbers crunching when you’d rather be creative. But I was a business major in college, almost MBA bound, and I did market research for 10 years of my corporate life so I actually, secretly, ENJOY looking at my numbers — not that I look forward to sitting down and doing this each month but it’s a necessary evil in some ways. It hasn’t been an easy process to learn it and do it right, but I’m so so so grateful to my friend Lynn for helping me along the way. She came by monthly for about a year, going thru my statements, and doing that magic word, “reconciling” it, so that I can analyze it and fix what’s off track. Thanks Lynn! You’ve helped my business become more successful consequently.

To return the favor, if that’s even possible, I took her kids out for a shoot. David is one of Jackson’s best buds and they went to overnight camp together this summer.

A great “last Hurrah!” before school+fall starts!

Nothing feeds the soul more than spending time with old (eh hem, not in age, but history!) friends, a lot of ‘em, tax-free outlet shopping, and some good salt air + sand all at the same time. Oh, and a good margarita or two. Our weekend was spent in Rehoboth Beach, DE with several friends from prep school one of which lives there year-round in a fabulous neighborhood — why we don’t have more like that in Alexandria! It was the perfect ending to a great summer.

Sabrina making classic Margaritas — a killer recipe

DJ doing dinner-prep — which was amazing — so much food!

Their boys and my boys in mom and dads (doh!) bedroom goofing off!

Their youngest, Linley (check out her gorgeous eyes), with our other friends newest addition (check out her hair)!

Linley has quite the personality and had no problem hangin’ with the big kids all weekend

My best friend Paige came up from Salisbury and was trying to eat all my birthday cake — look at our kids hovering — they can’t get their hands into it fast enough

I think Harry was doing something goofy, as usual, to make them laugh here.

So impressed — something I would love to try

How cool is this? Sandy “Sam” Puc is the co-founder of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep and an amazingly successful photographer. She rocked on her first skydiving jump. I am so envious!

My Best Friend + her kids

One would think that my best friend would get preferential treatment on my blog but clearly that isn’t the case here. It’s simply my memory and my lack of attention that she was ignored! Paige and her adorable kids, Connor and Caroline came to visit from the Eastern Shore in early August. They are hopefully going to surprise their dad with some portraits later this fall for his birthday or anniversary or some occasion!

Paige and I go way, way back to 11th grade (I have to say that now that I’m basically entering my 4th decade!) — I met her at my prep school, Mercersburg Academy in PA. The same school, if you’ll recall, where Jackson attended his first sleep-away camp this past July. Basically, Paige accosted me after field hockey practice one day during pre-season b/c I was so cool and she couldn’t resist being my friend. I get that all the time (wink, wink). So feeling sorry for her, I relinquished and we have been friends since. All kidding aside, she is one of my tried and true friends that will, without a doubt, be lifelong. We have our own language and jokes and even my husband will say, “I have no idea what you all are talking about or how you can talk for 8 hours straight”. It’s true, and there really isn’t anyone else I can do this with. Always someone, something or some issue to talk about. Tho, Paige has never been one to ‘make a long story short’, I tell her she is always making a “short story long” but I’m always entertained by her and love her stories. Love you Paige!!!

My boys with her kids…..what a crew!!

and the queens of chatter…

SuperSpeedySummer:2008

Does it not seem that summer goes faster and faster as you get older? It does for me. We had a great one — hope you did too!
